Walnut Pen Rack with Padauk Celtic Spiral Inlay

I made a display rack to manage the pens I keep on my desk better!

I have been wanting to make something for the pens for a couple years, but kept stalling out on a design. This came as a series of punctuated mental revisions, starting with a flat tray, then a triangular box with shelves on one face, and finally this. I made a cardboard prototype, then with few changes, the final piece. This is 6mm thick walnut hardwood with padauk for the inlay. Lots of pre-assembly sanding, simple glue-up, then three coats of wipe-on poly with sanding between coats. It turns out I have a lot of pens. So, I will probably make another one with different materials at some point.

That’s beautiful! I don’t keep near enough pens on my desk to need something like that, but I certainly have known a few who do!

I was waiting for the desk bump at the end of your video to show that they don’t fall off the stand though :stuck_out_tongue:

What a great solution for your pen problem! And not only does it make the organization nice, but those pens look nice themselves, so it’s great to be able to see them all at once. I agree with @deirdrebeth - I was waiting for the desk shake at the end! Thanks for showing us your design and the video.

your inlay looks really good. I also like the look of the joints. The smooth flush side panels are great. But the real question is what do you do with so many pens?

I love the pen rack. I use to collect fancy pens. It was a thing when I lived in Qatar as a kid.

The final product looks awesome.
