What is causing this

Today I noticed that my red maple tree has the bark chewed off of many of the limbs and don’t know what to think about it. Here are pictures that I took of the branches and the residue on the ground. I have never seen anything like this before.

Thank you for the information. What makes matters worse is that I am having to have a hole in my roof repaired from squirrel damage where they got in my attic.

That isn’t good. We have metal roofs, and even covered our shed roof with metal, so now the squirrels stay off of it because they slide. When we just had shingles, they never damaged the roof, but would get on it to try to hide nuts, and especially the maple seeds. We’ve never had them damage our trees though. Our tree damage comes from all the woodpeckers and nuthatches.

Sorry @davidgal2, it seems you have squirrel double trouble.

I guess I’m lucky that the (again today knocking on wood) only squirrel problem I’ve had is them eating my groceries that get delivered!

ugh. Conflicting feelings between how cute they are but how destructive they are!

The grey ones don’t know how lucky they are that white ones also hang around here. We won’t do anything to discourage them because then the whites would also be impacted and might not come around anymore

He was so proud of himself, I was proud of him, too.

I would be proud of him too. For some strange reason the squirrels have stopped striping the bark. Time will tell if the tree lives or dies.
