What's the red laser for (and a question about focus)

Find if I only have one object it will usually shoots a measurement in the center of an engrave or on the cut line of a cut/score. If I have multiple objects I’m not really sure how it decides where to take the measurement. Seems to always be over one of my objects. But no matter, I always watch the red laser light to make sure a bad height measurement isn’t taken. Things will obviously change when multipoint focus is enabled.

I had a job where I was engraving a design on a handle for one of my mugs. The red light fired JUST off to the side of the piece. I had to eventually fool it by unsticking a bit of the masking tape and let a “wing” out for the red light to fire on and recognize. The job itself was dead on to this 3/4 in wide handle, but the red light didn’t hit the design at all.

Well it turns out that the PG presets define the focus as an offset, so is this is another case where you can’t achieve the same with manual settings?
