Is there something to use to remove the wood engraving smell on your pieces?
If they’re small enough you can put them in a tupperware with some salt (as a bonus, it’ll also clean some of the char off the edges). If it’s larger, using a baby wipe on the edges will do the same. Time is the last resort 
On small pieces I use either salt or baking soda.
Do you rub the salt on the pieces?
I put them in the tupperware and then shake it like a maraca for a couple minutes. I find the right song makes it an impromptu exercise session!
