Wood canvas engraved turned painting!

I took a steampunk design and engraved the outline into a 12 x 12 wood canvas. Then free-handed the copper border and screws, added patina colors to age the copper. Then painted in the design, adding some of my own touches. This was all painted in metallic paints. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It was even better when it sold before I could even list it lol

Can you explain to me what wood canvas is please? Obviously it must be more than just wooden blocks, but who/how/why/what? Are they treated?
