Wood Inlay Save Icon Pin

I made some 1" (~24mm) floppy disk tack pins as a quick birthday gift. They are 3mm thick walnut and oak pieces assembled with wood glue. They got three coats of wipe-on poly with a light, fine-grit sanding between coats and after. Pin back attached with construction adhesive.

There is a 2-minute video montage of me making them:

This looks great.

Calling it a “Save Icon” makes me sad (and old).

Love it! Now do the trash can.

I think I might still have the plastic multi page folder with something like 30 Windows NT server installation diskettes!

I started on single-sided 5 1/4"…

Nice. Reminds me of the meme where the kid finds a 3.5 floppy in their dad’s desk and says “Wow…that’s cool. You 3d printed the SAVE icon.”

this is absolutely adorable!! Great job!

I love this! I used so very many of these, and the 5.25" ones as well!

There were even 8" floppies before the 5.25" disks!

I am trying to think of other iconic early tech that would make good pin designs. Cassette tapes, obviously. Maybe a VT-100 terminal.

I fully support this effort.

There are likely massive numbers of people who have no idea why the save icon looks like that. They understand a trash can as delete but never having seen a disk, they have no reference for a square doohickey with lines on it being “save”.

Not our kids maybe, but grandchildren for sure.

Yup. That was the feeling old part.

It’s been about 40 years since 3.5 inch discs came out for mainstream use. I still have some laying around (so I guess I should get to cleaning-up stuff).
