Wooden Wedding Braid Plaque

The mother of a friend of mine recently got remarried. My friend asked me to make something out of wood that incorporated three different species to symbolize her mother, the new husband, and God. She also wanted her mom’s favorite Bible verse included. This is what I came up with.

The main body of the plaque is baltic birch. The braid is red oak, bubinga, and olive each with a danish oil finish. The pieces of the braid were cut on a bandsaw using a pattern I cut on the GF. They were then textured with a belt sander. The frame is basic white pine with a dark walnut stain.

That is beautiful! The braid is really interesting and captivating (and looks like it was a lot of work!)

It didn’t really feel like a lot of work since I was trying something new in the wood shop (and since it went relatively smoothly). However, it was a little nerve wracking to cut those pieces with the band saw. Their long dimension is less than an inch resulting in a blade being uncomfortably close to fingers pretty much the entire time.
