You too could fix your belt :-)

I went on vacation last year and forgot my belt - so I picked one up in a resale shop in Amsterdam that I planned to use just for the vacation - but it turned out I really liked the belt!
Fast forward to a year later and the faux leather connectors are peeling, and I have leather, and a laser.
Tomorrow I’ll sew on the more complicated end, but look how pretty!

If you too have a belt you need fixing, this pattern is unlikely to match perfectly, but it might lead you down the right trail! There’s an option for a belt that gets narrower on both ends, and one that stays wide on the loop end.

I’m sewing it on with doubled over polyester sewing thread. I have waxed thread, but it’s WAY thicker and I thought this looked nicer with something more fine.

Here's the construction of the complicated end

First cut two of the strips and glue them so the smooth side it out both directions:

Then slide that through the holes in the piece, with the open ends towards the inside, and then sew the two ends together so you have a loop.

Then slide the piece onto the metal, be sure to have the outside on the outside, and the loop you just sewed entirely on the outside of the belt (or it’ll be too tight). I used a piece of tape to hold the two wings together.

Flip the flap down and sew it across, making sure you catch the wings when you do!

This is what the front looks like at this point.

Now do the same at the lower edge, once again making sure you catch the wings.

Lastly sew around the curve.

Et voila! You have a fixed belt.

Thanks for the lovely share. I’ve been thinking of using a woven band as an adjustable strap for a purse. Plastic clip closures aren’t worthy. This finish would be functional and look good, and cut down on the bulk of cloth at the closure.

I repaired my dog’s collar in a similar way - although I have a good sewing machine and also heavy needles, I simply used one of the many adhesives I had and put a “patch” on both sides.

It was our first Boxer’s from 20 years ago, so is very special, and pretty, so I was determined to keep it going.
