Zachary's Elevator

Hello folks! Back with another completed book nook. This one is inspired by the novel The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.

The spiral staircase is made of heavy carstock/light chipboard, with nail art accents (the bees and the sword on the front). The file was one I purchased from AngieScarrCrafts on Etsy and modified the railing and step designs to fit my vision better. It was cut with the GF. It was then primed and painted black and hit with a drybrushing of Pewter Rub N Buff.

The nook consists of an interior box made of 1/8" HDF. The elevator doors are light chipboard that were cut with my GF - Cutty McCutter. They were painted and then I applied Rub N Buff in Antique Gold.

The exterior box is also made of 1/8" HDF. I designed the top, sides and front based around symbols that are important in the book. Every side has the same frame in order to tie them together since the background design and symbols are different. These were cut out of two layers of light chipboard with my GF and then PAINSTAKINGLY glued into place.

Once everything was dry, I covered the exterior in two layers of a matte Mod Podge/Raw Umber paint mixture to seal everything and then another 3 or 4 coats of just paint. Lastly, I added Rub N Buff in Antique Gold.

If you are interested in looking at my in-progress photos, I have an album here with everything.

That’s super cool looking. Thanks for the techniques as well - good to see what those translate to in terms of the finished project.

But cardstock for the stairs? Wow, that must have taken as long as the rest of the book.

They took a while! But I love assembling miniatures and now I’m trying to figure out something else I can make with a spiral staircase so I can make another one lol

This is pretty amazing! I like so many things, but especially the staircase and the finishes you achieved on the exterior box is incredible.

Thank you. I love that I can get such detailed cuts using my GF. Some of these would be impossible to do with an electronic die cutter and would take WAY longer.

Also, Rub N Buff is truly magical. I have it in a bunch of different colours.

Thanks. Miniatures are my happy place… When they’re not making me swear.

That looks absolutely fantastic! All the details! Thanks for sharing your work with us. Someday I will make a booknook. I’ve grabbed all of the ones in the catalog but haven’t made any yet. And I’m not creative enough to design my own. Maybe someday though!
