Hi everyone, I have a question with my 1/8 gold mirror acrylic. We have cleaned the Glowforge recently. The image I used has been done many times. I have masking tape on both sides. I have the sheet facing me on the crumb tray. I have this cutting 200, full lower, 2 passes and hasn’t given me any issues. But, tonight it keeps scratching my acrylic. I used 2 sheets and it keeps doing this. I have tried the Novus 1-3 cleaners and it hasn’t taken it away.
That is crazing which is usually caused by wiping with alcohol. Also, I think using 2 passes with full power is overheating the acrylic. There are lots of posts here in the forum about crazing if you utilize the search function.
Yes to what @dklgood said.
Also, acrylic is prone to stress cracks (which is part of what causes the alcohol crazing). If you add teeny tiny circles to the corners of your cuts, it helps soften the pressure.
I added the small little circles and it still is doing it. I have the settings at 200/80/2 passes and it only scored the gold. Then I cut it at red mirror acrylic and used the proof grade settings and it cut it, but it still did the same thing. I haven’t used any cleaners. Any ideas?
I’m wondering if that mirror acrylic is using an unusual backing, because there’s no way you should need two passes at all, let alone that but even working.
Did the PG settings on the masked red acrylic also caused the flashback/crazing?
If the gold cut at the red acrylic setting, you clearly don’t need two passes. I cut gold acrylic at 180/full one pass which is slightly faster than the red setting. I don’t mask and I cut mirror side up.
It’s a mystery, I tried cutting 200/80 on 1 pass and it only scored the gold mirror. I “cut” it with the proof grade on red mirror and it cut but left those scratches.
I’m going to try 180/pull power….
I’m also going to try and use the dawn dishwashing soap….
