Thanks, I do like the full laser from a simplicity aspect, but not a fan of the banding effect of the individual pieces.

Glad to hear that it gave you some ideas. Looking forward to seeing your completed project.

if you line up/sand something like that well and do it with hardwood, the banding will be much more subtle (depending on the wood). i’ve done multi-layer with walnut and it’s not immediately obvious.

These 3d printed corners are cool.

multi-layer with walnut

Hi, I’m Chance.
I wanted to make something a bit more finished to celebrate the return of my Glowforge, here’s an idea I’d had kicking around for a while.
I wanted to make a layered, magnetically-sealed dice box, but I wanted to stay away from a few things I’d seen in other people’s designs. Specifically, I wanted to avoid the look of bare layers, and I felt like all other hex boxes I’d seen made were unnecessarily difficult to open because of the way you have to pull the magnets …
Praise be to Sol…

If you like sci fi and haven’t started Raised By Wolves on HBO, boy are you in for a treat.
The religious faction (The Mithraics) are a bunch of awful patriarchal zealots, but they sure have great brand identity. I wanted to do an inlaid box and the Mithraic sun was an easy decision.
Notes:
In reality I wanted to make a box with an accent layer of inlaid wood. The entire box was built just to show that concept off.
The woods are a mix of 1/8" and 1/16" thick…
Hello, I’m Mike.
I wanted to try another variation of the approach I used in the layered hexagonal dice box , but on a smaller scale, to test how well the method worked at small scales. Well, the answer is “this good”. I don’t have a great deal of notes on this that weren’t covered in the larger build, this was largely a refinement of the technique.
Overall height 1.25"
Diameter 1.9"-ish
All solid hardwoods
Sanded to 600 grit
Finished with wipe on polyurethane
Regular readers…
And for a pure laser different solution:
Maple/wenge 1/8". No veneer was harmed in the making of this box. Entire box is sanded to 600 grit and waxed/oiled with Feed-n-wax. Overall dimensions: 5 x 2-5/8 x 1-1/8" (127 x 67 x 25mm)
I wanted to make a curved box, but I don’t like the look for living hinges, and I don’t want to fool with using veneers to cover them up.
Enter kerf cutting. The general idea is that you remove material from the inside of your curve, and the wood can then be successfully bent. I’ll do this …

the banding effect
Yeah, you either have to paint over it or lean all the way in, as @evansd2 so nicely illustrated.

My thing with layers is I am a messy gluer and even with alignment pins, it’s a mess. Maybe if I did more of them it would go faster.

just means more sanding (and more sandpaper).

I often use a small paintbrush to apply glue to my layers, and wipe whatever small squeeze-out up as I go. Some of my sword handles have 90+ layers, you use only as much glue as you need, and there’s not a ton to clean as you go.

That’s beautiful - and the transparency of the edges of the 3D printed corners almost makes it look like you carefully poured resin into each corner and let it settle!

That last one was the first thought that came to my mind. That only works with hardwood, not plywood, right? (I think so but only feeling about 90% sure. lol)
I’ve done it with MDF, so plywood should work. The trick is finding the right depth and spacing for the bend cuts.

I bet it would work with wood-core ply like BB. The tricky part is the water method for softening the wood - most plywoods don’t react well to water, especially mdf core (like proofgrade).
Prefinished woods won’t like it either.

Oooo, I really like this. I’m always up for anything that replaces finger joint, of which I’m not a fan. Thanks for the STL.

I’ll try it with CFP purebond! I have so many things going on. I’m going to have to start planning out my time better. lol
