Recently Mrs Techquest got me an Airbrush for my upcoming bday. If you saw my last post about making the Resin mask, I struggled a bit with detailed painting. She got this since I’m working on more masks and this has spun into a new obsession of sorts
I found a cute little dragon coloring page on Pinterest and converted it into an SVG, engraved the outline onto some cheap canvas and away I went.
I’ve learned more about cleaning my airbrush in the last few days during this then inside using it but imo that’s all apart of the learning curve.
Over all o have some cleanup to do around the edges but I’m incredibly proud of it, I might put some kind of gloss on it and give it to my mom for Christmas or something, not sure yet.
The photo progression is excellent. It really shows what to expect going from the outline to the finished result. Lots of time it’s easy for us to see the end result and think it’s one step. And then when our work doesn’t go that way we think we’re failing. Seeing the step by step progress is super affirming.
So do you use a mask of some sort when you paint? Or are you just really good at staying in the lines? I have a feeling my attempts would look like a big color mixed poofy dandelion or something.
No masking, I tend to like using the super tight grouping setting on my needle when I’m working closer to the edges. It definitely had me worried for a bit when it wasn’t looking as clean but honestly adding the outline really really made it pop and come to life
I used airbrushes for some time. They vary drastically in quality and as such, can have a dramatic difference on what gets put down. When I finally found one I really “connected” with, I was able to use it exactly as I wanted, tuning it to the desired effect.
It truly is an art, and I am no artist - but I was able to recognize how important it was to find the tool that worked best for me, and how to use it to achieve what I wanted.
I honestly have no idea. I bought it back before the days of Amazon, and probably last used it in the mid 2000’s. I think I bought it at a local art supply store, we have one here called Dick Blick and I am pretty sure that’s where.
