Another Astrolabe

Inspired by @eflyguy’s Astrolabe project, I wanted to make my own. I also used the astrolabe generator as a starting point, and then customized those EPS files with Illustrator. Mine is personalized to my geographic location and should be fully functional. I used a combination of thick :proofgrade: maple and cherry plywood, with medium :proofgrade: walnut and clear acrylic. The alidade and rule were 3D printed and customized in Fusion 360. I added some brass hardware to complete the project. It’s raining here today, so can’t officially test it until the sun comes out.

Very nice! Always many steps beyond my abilities! :+1:

Curious about the size?

Width is 10.89 in engraved sideways to be able to fit on the print area. From a functional standpoint, it’s probably too big and heavy, but this will be a display piece

Very nice! I actually had to google what an astrolabe is and how to use it. Found an interesting video on YouTube by a guy named Michael Robinson entitled “How to Use an Astrolabe in the Daytime.” Very informative.

I gave away all of mine about that size and am keeping a small one for myself, fridge-magnet. The ones I’m planning to churn out will be small, but I will leave a contact number with the places I hope will sell them in case anyone wants a larger one, which I can customize for them…

I pretty much eliminated all the “stuff” from my life when I bought this place. I keep giving everything away that matters to people who will appreciate it. My daughter has a fabulous room at her mom’s which I call her little shop of wonders. All kinds of eclectic stuff…
