Artwork shows but it wasn't aligned and went off the piece

My work looked nearly centered on the piece and had well over an inch of white space all around it but when the laser cut it, it didn’t fit and went off the work. (It was just a practice piece, thank goodness.) Was it a setting I missed? How do I trouble shoot this so I know in the future that it will cut/ as shown?

Alignment issues are often resolved by using the set focus tool prior to placing your artwork, and making sure that the printhead is not moved with the machine running. You also need to know that the camera view shows the usable area of the Glowforge bed, not the entire bed. Can you provide a bit more information about this print. Which Glowforge do you have? What material were you using? Did you set focus prior to arranging your design?

Thank you, i"ll bet it was the set focus. I’m not yet well versed on the order of steps.

I have a Pro and was not using proofgrade but using a piece of pine which does not have a listing in the materials.

Close. If you are moving it from one place to another you probably need a recallibration each time.
