Bizarre pattern of power loss

Okay to preface: the other day I thought my laser was done for – it was going through the motions, but barely leaving a mark on the material for any type of score, cut or engrave. Tried cleaning everything, using different materials, etc. and nothing worked. I was about to reach out here to seek advice, because I don’t have any proofgrade material and I knew that would be the first thing Glowforge support would ask me to test. But then I found some 1/8" mdf I had on hand, so figured I’d try the gift of good measure. First print, terrible. Second print… perfect.

So that’s been the pattern now: every time I turn my Glowforge on or try to use it after it’s been idle for a while, the laser barely fires at all. I’ll try my designs a couple times, then give up and switch over to the gift of good measure on faux-proofgrade draftboard. The first print will continue to have issues, the second print will be totally fine, and then the laser will work great until the next time I turn it off or leave it idle.

Has anyone else had this issue? To be clear I’m not making ANY adjustments between GoGM prints, just running them back to back. I’m completely flummoxed.

Fading power supply or tube? Literally has to warm up to full power. I’d guess power supply, dunno what others would guess but official support might know the symptoms.

As a next step, I would contact support so they can examine the print data from the log files. To locate the log files, they may ask for the serial number on the back of the printer (e.g., ABC-123). You can also include that and a link to this Community thread to find the fastest resolution.

Looks to me like the tube is done. It’s simply aged-out. That’s the nature of a gas-filled tube.

As stated above, just reach out to support and they will confirm the diagnosis…
