A belated thank you for the birthday greetings! We celebrate my Halloween birthday with a lot of pumpkin carving, so I haven’t been too regular on the forum this past week or so. We had 70 carved pumpkins displayed in front of our house this year. Here’s one of my favorites, a tribute to the magnificent (and magical) Maggie Smith.

We started carving on October 29, but most of the pumpkins were carved on October 30 and 31. As you know, pumpkins rot, so we can’t begin too early. My family does the bulk of the work, but we also have a bunch of friends (maybe 25?) who come by to carve one pumpkin each.

One of my top tips is that a shrivelling jack-o’-lantern can be revived by soaking it in cold water for four or five minutes.

That is an impressive number of pumpkins over 3 days!
