Just worked out another possibility based on what I know goes on with the targeting laser, and this might be the easiest of all.
Going to be easier to show you with a picture:
Stick two small post it notes (light colored, or white is best) on top of the lid in the position shown relative to your design before you run your job as usual. They will give the targeting laser dot something to land on that is the correct height for the top of the lid, and that should prevent misfires.
Try to keep them level with the surface of the lid. Can use tape on the back to firm them up.
