The item you are engraving must be within the 1/2" focus range of the Glowforge. With the honeycomb tray out, the surface to be engraved must be between 1.5" and 2" from the floor of the Glowforge. Many items must be elevated off the floor to be in range of the laser. This handy tool will show you when you are in the right spot. No-Math Focus Ruler
