Discussion of October 2017 update

This… Is worrying. It’s something I’ve been fretting about to be honest. The initial stance on tube replacement, the lack of focus on international buyers and the possibility of software being abandoned or pay-walled at some later stage all concern me a lot. Each possibility would brick my lovely new forge and any business built around it.

At First I Was Like
“Dan Just Slid Into My DMs! He Tryna Get My Address For My GF”
Happy

But He Didn’t Want My Address…
omg

He Implied My Wait May Be Prolonged…
Sad

And Now I Have To Be On “Email Watch” Next Week To Learn More…
wait

Was My Response To This Necessary? Nope! But When I’m Sad, I Try To Laugh… Originally I Hoped That When The GF (Girlfriend) Moved Out (for Grad School), The New GF (GlowForge) Would Move In.

Sooo Dan, It Would Be Great To Wake Up Every Morning And Have A GF To See.
I’ll Give You 99 Cents If You Can Hook It Up Sooner.

Illustrating your point with anything Sherlock is okay in my book. (God, I miss that show. Please let someone create another one that exercises your brain.) :no_mouth:

The very, very good news is that everything I’ve seen says GF has built a really quality product, and I’m pretty confident I’ll be an ecstatic user once I have mine. So, if anyone can build a category-defining product here, the GF team has the best shot!

Did you watch any of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency?
I think season two is set to drop mid-month.

You win the forum for the day

Never seen it…is it a good one? I’ll go see if I can find it on Youtube. :slightly_smiling_face:

I like it… it’s weird but fun (and I don’t think it would be against your sensibilities)
Netflix/BBC collab, based on a book by my favorite author, Douglas Adams.
Elijah Wood is in it, and there is a cat.

Cool! I’ll check it out! :grinning:

where will you be it at? I have a fablab for teenagers here in Munich.

Nah, I am an Australian and living back in Oz now.
I used to live up North (Bremerhaven and then at the schloss in Liebnau) for 5 years.

Go to your Universities Marketing & Psychology Department. There are plenty of papers on just this; much of it follow Addiction Theory models

@dan Is there clarification on if the email we receive next week will tell us when we should expect to receive the Glowforge, or when we should expect to receive the email asking us if we are ready to receive shipment?

You actually have to complain via one of the contact us methods. Otherwise they assume you dont’ care.

29, M, Software Engineer, in the 100k-200k range, 5 years seems like a nice round number, It’s not about the number of promises. it’s about the reasons for breaking them, the least amount of time possible. tell me early

The way I think about it is it was a decision made and paid for by past me. The fact that it’s now 2 years later doesn’t really change anything about why I wanted the machine or what I felt like it’s worth. And it’s not like I’m sitting here missing the money in my bank account. As my mom would always say “it’s only money”. The wait is starting to get to me, but as a day 7 order with the banner on 6, the end feels nigh. Seems like a silly idea to cancel right now.

One thing though…when you say:

When I look back over the last two years, I have a suspicion that someone at GF already knew some of the answers. After all I’m still waiting.

Are you saying that the glowforge team knew ahead of time it was going to take 2 years to deliver, and purposefully teased their customers along? If so, I think that’s a little too much malice to attribute. Tech is hard…there’s a reason the industry pays well. Almost every time estimate I give at work is off by a factor of 3. and that’s typically after i double my actual estimate in my own head. And that’s just the software side. Hardware that has physical manufacturing challenges is a-whole-nother ball game. I guess that’s why I’d probably wait up to 5 years of delays, so long as I was seeing progress. I get that sometimes you few a thousand bad parts in. Or have some stupid hard to fix issue that you didn’t find until really late. And that’s just the big stuff. The entire way you have your little speed bumps you hit: your personally just off your mark days, thinking you understood something better than you did and realizing all the extra stuff you have to worry about now, spending hours looking for the bug and not being able to figure out why it doesn’t happen when you debug it.

So I can understand the delays. The one thing I don’t like is how slow they are on their communication. Everyone in the forum knew there was another delay coming based on the information we had been given. Why did it take until October, their promised delivery…errr shipment…month, to actually announce it?

Thanks. One question – the promise of a scheduling email implies that fulfillment, which would have been tailing off by mid-December, may continue at full volume throughout the Christmas rush. Are there plans to halt shipping for some or all of the seasonal rush?

These machines have not taken kindly to rough handling. Attempting to ship at full volume during the holidays seems like it’ll only lead to a steeply elevated warranty return rate.

Along the same line of thought, has there been any consideration of allowing local pickup in South Bay, particularly during December in lieu of shipping? If it went well, that could expand to one- or two-day regional self-pickup “events” later down the line. I don’t live on the west coast, but would be willing to drive up to 500 miles (Chicago, St. Louis, DC, Atlanta, Nashville, Research Triangle, New Orleans) to avoid the whole parcel-service experience.

Ditto on the embarrassment… as an active maker in my area I can’t in good conscience discuss or recommend GF to anyone. I’m not saying anything bad, I just avoid the topic all together, kinda sad really …

Is this up on netflix? I love the Dirk Gently series!

They’ll be showing up in deliveries soon - no ETA on when we’ll send them to existing Pro owners.

This is comical…

So… we get an email next week telling us when ours will ship, and supposed to believe THAT email?

Should be good considering there’s no certifications yet for any country but the US…
