I have a spark. Do you have to have premium to create a design?

No, premium just adds extra tools. Any owner can upload files and create their own projects.
If you will work through the beginner tutorials uploading your first original will be covered.

Welcome to the forum - you’re gonna have so much fun!
Aura and Spark do have a file size limit of 100kb without Premium, so if you’re creating something in your own design program, keep that in mind.

The design they provide for the “print your own design” tutorial is over 100KB in size. Hmmm.

Thank you for tagging me on this. I think this only applies to custom design uploads and should not affect catalog or previously uploaded designs. I’m looking into this more to clarify.
In the meantime, it can help to use https://support.glowforge.com/hc/en-us/articles/18010217365787-Reducing-SVG-or-PDF-File-Size as a potential workaround

The design for this tutorial is provided as a 332KB PDF file to download that the user has to then upload (since printing an uploaded file is the goal of the tutorial), but won’t be able to without Glowforge Premium due to the file size limitation.
