Engrave on multi level product

I am trying to engrave on the edge of a shadow box frame. My glowforge is focusing on the inside of the frame and not on the outer edge. The outer edge of the frame is .75". I tried using masking paper over the opening in hopes that it would fool the focus but it didn’t work. Requesting help with engraving on multi level surfaces.
Thank you,

Use “set focus” on the area you want to engrave, then place your art.

You can also stack up some scrap material to the same height as what you want to engrave, then use “set focus” on that.

You’re obviously removing the crub tray, right? Max material height with it installed is a little under .5"

Make sure that the surface you wish to engrave is within the 1/2" focus range of the Glowforge. Use the set focus tool and make sure that the red beam lands squarely on the surface you will be engraving. Keep using the set focus tool until the beam lands where you want it to.
