Inside will be tough because of the size and focus depth issues. But engraving shells works really well, makes a bright white line.

A regular Conch shell is huge for what you can fit in a laser. but there are a lot of shells, particularly bivalves, that can work very well. Coquina shells are tiny but thin enough that you might cut through and often very beautiful.
Evolution note: If people collect all the colored ones like at Venice Beach, Fl they will all be white. On more remote beaches the birds miss the colored ones and very few are white.
In other shells the colors may be layered. Many of the smoother shells you might be able to cut just a part and use that. Or there are better fakes than real at places like this.
