I have been getting areas in my engravings that are dark and then light. I am using 1/4" Russian Baltic Birch and engraving with the Basswood Thick proofgrade settings but have also seen it using the maplewood proofgrade settings as well. Is this just smoke from the engraving by chance that needs to be cleaned?
What you’re seeing is the underlying woodgrain and variations in the middle layer with Baltic birch. Use less power to stay in the top layer, and it’ll probably appear more consistent.
If you look closely at my dymaxion globe you can see knots in the middle layers.
