Finished (more or less)

Bits and parts are still trickling in (like the knobs for the “map”) but I have officially deemed the R2-D2 project to be done. Or at least done enough to show it off…

I really don’t have the words to express my appreciation for this effort. The Glowforge in the right hands can produce magic - you proved it.

If you don’t already do set design for films, you missed your calling. This project is phenomenal!

I feel like I should go make sure the door’s locked. This is the best nerd porn I’ve ever seen.
You have won the internet today.

That reminds me of something, but I can’t put my finger on it. Your Glowforge is still OK. Right?

R2s just waiting to connect to the local network!

Hahahah…

Yup. Didn’t steal any parts to build him…

Actually you spotted my one mistake! The front “eye” should be red/blue and the rear eye should be green/yellow. Will address that in a bit. Right now I’m just enjoying having some company other than Gozer around the house.

Wow, what an R2-D2 collection you have! No wonder you have a room just for it!! Looks fantastic!

All of the R2s up on that shelf are not so much a collection as what happens when family & friends find out you’re building one… (it’s been a long process. That shelf will look different shortly, more in-universe and less of a shrine to R2-D2. I’m creating some tools and things to live up on the shelf and the other R2s will move onto a shelf in my study.

One of “those things” was a failed 3D print that had been sitting on my workroom desk. Went through my box of laser-leftover pieces, made a few NEW pieces, and NOW it’s some kind of hand-held scanner:

Still need a few more tech-tchotchkes (techotches?) but you can get the idea from this:

Today I took R2 out on a shakedown walk. Things went pretty well (although I WILL be adding Loctite to a few of the bolts…)

While we were out, he made a new friend!

Then he got really excited when I told him we could see ships from the end of the block, but I don’t think they were the kind of ships he was expecting…

Still it was a good afternoon and he passed his shakedown with flying colors!

After weeks of working on these projects it was nice to take the day today and catch up on some TV…

That bookshelf looked too much like a bookshelf… Back to the Glowforge!

Add some random plumbing parts, a few bolts, and…

Much better!
