ultimately it was discovered that it was because I had used export rather than save as

Papyrus Font SVG issue details - nailed it

So believe it or not, it is a specific letter of the papyrus font. It is the capital N produces an unsliceable file. I validated the XML (it’s really, really simple with just one letter on screen, I could hand validate it for that matter). Now I emailed @rita who suggested trying the “Save As” rather than “Export” in AI. Yep, the save-as one works fine, the export does not, and only when an N is on the screen does this make a difference! So in looking (and diffing) the XML of the SVGs it appears…
