Hardwood score

I found a cabinet maker who was moving shop and wanted to sell a bunch of hardwood scraps. I took advantage.

It was priced so low that I went a little overboard. I regret nothing.

They’re all around 6” wide (a few are 10” wide) solid hardwood in 3/16” thickness. Board lengths range between ten and seven feet.

It’s just a comic amount of wood.

Nothing to regret, at the right price I would have been going through the couch looking for lose change to buy all I could.
I just wish there was something local where I could buy hardwood at any price. The big box home improvement stores have vary little at exorbitant pricing. I’m really needing to make a run to this little town I know of with a lumber yard where all they have is everything no one else has. It’s great aside from being 3 hours away.

I use hardwood from the big-box store, fence planks in cedar and pine. I have a planer and can bring them down to a nice flat surface, then a little light sanding before engraving. I have cut as thick as 3/8 in the 'forge if I want a “shape” vs a sqaure/rectangle that I can cut with power tools - burns a lot, but that’s the effect I desire.

Yeah I wish I had the space for a planer or better yet a drum sander.

What you got there? Is that a planer of some sort? I was thinking a traditional planer with like an in feed and blades and all that.

And I have an orbital sander which is good for a lot of stuff but drum sanders let you sand to very precise thicknesses. Different use cases.

Just hand tools. I’ve had the big stuff but they’re not necessary for what I need for the GF. I made a 5x3’ cedar plank (fence pickets) patio table insert to replace the boring glass using a hand planer to finish each piece. I got rid of most of my corded tools over time.

i can’t imagine planing a board down with the hand planer like that. i’ve used mine to take a little off the end of a door or something like that, but i don’t have the hand skills to do a good job of planing evenly to do a board.

That’s awesome! Now you just need to keep them from warping.
