Help Needed: Precise Drilling in Hardwood with Mini Benchtop Drill Press

Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out for some advice on a problem I’m having with my mini benchtop drill press. I’m working on a project that requires drilling into small hardwood pieces at a 45-degree angle using a 1 mm drill bit. The wood I’m working with is 4 mm thick, and the placement of the holes needs to be very precise.

The issue I’m facing is that when the drill bit comes in contact with the wood, it tends to bend and slide before finally going in, which results in the hole being at the wrong angle. This misalignment is causing significant problems for my project.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Can anyone recommend small drill bits that are less prone to bending

and sliding, or suggest any techniques or tools that could help improve the accuracy of my drilling?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

Try brad point bits.

They have a very pointy end that should keep the bit from wandering so you won’t need as much pressure which should keep you from bending.

The set I linked only goes down to 3mm but Amazon does sell 2mm bits. I didn’t Google enough to find a source for 1mm versions but maybe @rbtdanforth might know since he’s used a lot of micro bits in his jewelry work.

Mark the holes with a center punch before drilling. The resulting dimple should give the bit a place to start without wandering.

and be sure to have your drill at speed before making contact, so it doesn’t have to push through the drag of the wood while speeding up!
