How to start using Glowforge

Just got my Glow forge in and super excited. No idea how to use it. Are their instructions somewhere on what to do? I would like to understand the difference between, print, cut, laser, etc… What type of wood to use pending the type of project? I would just like to do a simple cut out of my business name. Where is the software located? I must be missing something?? Please send a link where there is some documentation please.

Welcome to the forum. This will be a valuable source of information as you unpack your Glowforge and begin creating.

After you complete the setup process, work through the Glowforge tutorials and then read everything in the “Learn” link provided by @chris1.

Also, read through this section to understand what you can laser and what you absolutely should not: https://support.glowforge.com/hc/en-us/sections/11792441492251-Glowforge-Safety

If video support helps I made this series awhile back that has 11 videos in it in order to learn as much as possible in about an hours time combined: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA6TGCGiz_3Bw1NgmkK6UqKWBhHQG9Fpe
Otherwise I am now working on an updated version that goes more in-depth with longer videos too but it’s still being developed and I am only 5 episodes into it.

Congratulations on your new Glowforge. I have had mine for about 5 months now and I am learning new things every day. Before I received my machine I was watching video after video on YouTube on how to use my Glowforge. Have patience, you are going to get frustrated and wonder why you purchased it, but just take your time and practice doing simple things. I didn’t buy my machine to make money, mostly just to play with my grandkids making signs and dinosaurs ect. I enjoy a site called Cuttle. You can get 3 free designs a month. Also I have downloaded quite a few SVG designs from Etsy. My first project was engraving names and figures on pencils. I made a jig from cardboard and followed a Video on Youtube. Very inexpensive. Once again, congratulations and have fun.

Thank you! I’m wanting to cut out my granddaughter’s name and just cut out some simple hearts but when I have the software open the text doesn’t seem to work. Does the Glow forge actually have to be powered up when using the software? I have lots of SVG’s from my Cricut so that is good to know!

Welcome to the funhouse!
I came in here years ago in the same position you were in. It was this community that damaged my ignorance, and has been a constant source of help and inspiration.
You came to the right place. Enjoy your adventure !
