You have overlapping vectors. Just select both and combine them using the Pathfinder menu. (After you create the outlines).
Yup, what @Jules said and this one is not unique to ilistrator.
the shapemode you want in the pathfinder palette is “unite,” just in case it’s not obvious.
thanks!! that worked! should I assume I’ll have to do that with all script fonts?
you’ll need to do that with any two solid surfaces you overlap. if you want them to be one larger piece, you’ll need to combine the overlapping shapes to be one piece, whether it’s text or just two circles.
You’ll need to do it with any kind of text that has glyphs touching each other. If nothing it touching, Unite won’t hurt. I just do it by habit on all text now.
(The other day I found a font that needed Expand after converting to outlines, too! That was unexpected. Didn’t think converting to outlines would work that way.)
