I sprayed some Polyurethane Satin finish on it afterwards and liked it, so I think I’ll do it for the next one. This one was just a prototype.

I can’t tell the scale from the pictures, but could you use Bamboo Skewers from the grocery store and dip the square end in some wood stain to darken the visible end?
