Lament Configuration puzzle box (Hellraiser)

I just knocked one of these out for fun based on someone’s share elsewhere. I plan to make another but this time paint the wood gold first, and use a heavier engrave for contrast.

This one is scaled for 1/16" ply (closer to 2mm actually) I have and less than 40mm/cubed, but you could easily scale it up (which I intend to do, I just wanted to make a small one to see how it looked), just adjust for the thickness of each part.

Actually, no. I created the one I posted from scratch (using artwork I found online) inspired by an alphabet cube someone shared that reminded me of it. I’d not seen that other one before.

That’s cool, but I’m not a fan of tabbed boxes.

Turned out great. I like the idea of painting then engraving. Thanks for the share!

I didn’t take a pic outside before I gave it away, but this one is a little larger and painted first, it catches and reflects natural light nicely.

That looks fantastic! I have a file somewhere for a puzzle box with this engraving pattern… not in the catalog for obvious reasons (see the mimic thread).

The edges are far from perfect but these are just test pieces. When I commit to the finished piece - most likely Walnut - I will make them a perfect fit so they aren’t visible. The design lends itself to having a thin, dark border.

My daughter is pretty sharp, but she hasn’t figured out what it is yet. (I gave her the 2nd one this afternoon at a casual get-together)…

Just a little tip about the Lament Configuration and what should NOT be tried when using it:

  1. Do not create an invite for anyone as the only attendee in a conference room.
  2. Do not leave the puzzle box on the middle of the table
  3. Do not leave a note that says " We Have Such Sights To Show You."

Fortunately, these are non-functional. I’ve fiddled with the first one I still have, and can not get the segments to re-align…

Wow! That paint really makes a difference. It’s kind of stunning!
