Maximize Material Usage with Smartfit

We are releasing a new feature for Premium subscribers: Smartfit.

Smartfit packs the most material into the smallest space, so you get to

  • Save money (with less material)
  • Save your time (with no parts to arrange)
  • Save laser time (with faster prints)

To give it a try, simply select multiple shapes in your workspace and select the Smartfit icon in the right menu bar.

You’ll see a progress indicator while we find the optimal layout, and then the selected objects will move into a more efficient configuration.

Smartfit is coming soon to your Glowforge - it will be turning on for all Premium customers over the next four weeks. You don’t need to do anything - you’ll know it’s ready when you select multiple items and see the Smartfit icon.

To save you the math, everyone should have this by 12/23/2024. That’s 4 weeks since it was announced.

This is a very useful tool for me! However, I have observed that Smartfit does not rotate any of the items, so if everything selected does not fit you might try manually rotating some items and then try running it again for a better fit.

Rotating can definitely be helpful for getting stuff to fit, but keep in mind that grain direction sometimes matters - so be careful what you rotate :smiley:

Thank you for that!

It might be nice to have it as an option at some point, but it should definitely continue to default to not rotating.
