Measuring Question

I bought some calipers to measure things that are not PG material. Now a question that may be very easy to answer and I’m just missing it. If I have something I want to engrave, lets say a cigar box, and it’s 2" tall according the the calipers, how to I measure this when the crumb tray is removed?
I think the “type in your measurement” caps pretty low. Could someone tell me the steps of engraving something with the crumb tray removed so that the laser knows how far away it is?
