Hello, you may call me Asterion.
I wanted to make an inlaid box with a secret. Instead of writing it up like I usually do, I’ll just let the pictures do the bulk of the talking.
- 1/8" maple and purpleheart hardwoods
- 1/16" yellowheart and padauk hardwoods
- 1/16" brass rod, headliner fabric.
The treasure revealed:
The lid is a maze, you have to solve the maze by twisting the lid and guiding the three tabs along the correct path. I designed it to be “oh cool” difficulty, not “I’m going to throw this thing” difficulty. Fun project.
Beautiful and well-executed!
Very well done. Did you sand the burn off or use the Clorox wipe trick?
The contrasting wood colors are stunning looking. Beautiful inlay too.
I sanded it off, the clorox wipe (or any type of wiping) will not solve the surface imperfections problem, and my goal here was to have a completely smooth outside that is nice in the hand.
Besides, wiping doesn’t get the surface remotely clean enough for my tastes.
Darn autocorrect! Meant to say !
That is so very cool!! You did an amazing job with that one.
The box is super fun! A minotaur paired with a maze…perfect.
Ha! Right?! The box is too pretty to just have tossed.
It started with the maze idea, and I was thinking I should probably make it decorative in some way… the Minotaur came to mind almost immediately.
First I thought… ok, Taurus… oh, last photo, mind blown! That’s pretty awesome; a 3D inside maze.
I think this is my top 5 boxes you have made. Love the built in maze.
This is sublime. I love it.
The maze aspect is so great. Very fun. Box inlay is epic as usual.
Impeccable inlay, next level stuff. Have you memorized the maze yet?
Kind of? It’s easy to get lost.
