Need Help with a Gradient Fill Outline

I’m making a leather shield for a firefighter’s helmet. The attached image is his station number, and I would like to “bevel” an outline around the outside perimeter of each number. Can this be done? I’m using Inkscape.

Forgot to add: This will be printed into delrin for an embossing stamp.

Yeah generally you do an outer glow. There have been threads about this. Let’s see if I can dig one up…
