Nonlaser things that I think GFers will find interesting

Sanding edge char. I’m more into cutting than engraving, but I might engrave more if I learned the tricks.

I guess it’s time for me to seriously dig into this aspect. I’m sure @evansd2 has got it covered somewhere in the FAQ.

Let’s leave it at that, since this is the “non-laser” thread.

Why @Purplie? What´s going on? Remodelling or renovating? Moving to a bigger site?
I hope it´s not health related.

Yipes! A wood shop can be many things so I would not assume it was not airconditioned. But a CNC is a messy household pet while a CO2 laser is an obligate one, needing a much more controlled environment.
If I had a decent retail operation I would be seriously looking at the 3D printer. But I don’t and it is looking like the economy is going to be rough for a while. I keep thinking it is like the early 1970s when folks had more rings than fingers, and draped in gold and silver. That time is not this one.

Or you could 3D print your own:

Sold! I’m getting that 3D printer.

(So I guess I’ll spend the 8 months deciding which of the zillion fractal vise patterns to start with. And 8 more months making mods.)

Which CNC did you get? I have the first Nomad, I got it when my husband was trying to convince me to let go of that crazy laser idea. It’s a pretty precise tool but I still find it’s easier to just saw some things out than dealing with workholding :joy:

I have one of the original Nomad CNC machines via their introductory Kickstarter campaign. It seemed like it might be a better way to produce the kinds of 3D objects I would want to make than, say, a Ultimaker (one of the early hobby-grade FDM 3D printers). I did the tutorial projects, then left it sitting for years without really feeling like I had a good use for it.

More recently, I was able to see where it could do specific things a laser couldn’t do as well, and have used it for a few projects. [EDIT: I did not think the linking through here: there are links to two projects, one is “a few” and the other is “projects.”]

If I were getting a new desktop CNC now, I would want a 4-axis machine. I have done some basic 2-sided machining with the Nomad, but 4-axis brings things closer to what you can do with 3D printing, but with a wider range of materials.

I also have an OG nomad. I used it a ton. Found that to save time, most of my stuff ended up 2d. (Waterline cuts only). So, transitioning to a laser was straightforward. Now it mostly gathers dust except when cutting materials the laser cannot. I can outsource stuff the laser or nomad cannot do.

My next adventure may be one of these fancy laser cutter/ welders.

4-axis would be a dream! I too have mostly done 2D with it. It’s wonderfully precise.

I was looking at this more and I really was seriously considering it but decided in the end I just can’t risk doing a UV printer because of past skin sensitivities. I’m so bummed - I will have to live vicariously through you guys who are getting one! Can’t wait to see what you make! That printer looks like tons of fun.

It was your basic floor mill that weighrd a ton and had two stepper motors working the wheels, with the vertical set by hand, and some mechanical to electronic gadgets I never understood.

old school, I like it!

I understand. Resin sensitivity is no joke!

Given that there are no guarantees with Kickstarters, it’s cool that they offered refunds at all. (Although I’m not naive - this was a brand-security situation and not a “goodness of their hearts” situation) I believe they also offer credits to future Kickstarters. But I’m not sure I get your comment “anything but refunds.” What else should they offer?

I want companies to take solid risks to bring us amazing new products. And I understand that sometimes those risks don’t work out. It sucks if you’re bitten by that, but we wouldn’t have innovation without it.

It’s the third highest Kickstarter listed on the platform. Let’s hope it all comes together!
