I get two or three different brands of phone book each year, both at home and at my shop. There are still some businesses that don’t bother with internet listings (often businesses that do one thing very well, have done for a long time, and have old-time craftsman owners who could care less about about ‘getting their name out there’). I could opt out, I guess, but I have not.
They are skinny little things now, though, you can’t really use them for self defense the way you could in the past. Ripping one in half is also much less impressive these days.
In my town of 50,000 we have three or four phonebooks. They are operated by independent companies not affiliated with the phone company, so in other words 3 or 4 companies trying to sell the same thing to the same market. The more popular one is about 2 inches thick, and the reason it’s popular is because they have published the complete menus for every restaurant in town, in the back of the book. I have to admit, that’s pretty cool, because whether you want to order delivery or go to a finer restaurant, you can decide where you want to eat based on what piqued your interest after going through menus.
Aside from that, I keep phone books. They make for great paint mixing pallets which you can then “clean up” just by ripping out a few pages, and you get a fresh working surface.
Did you?! That’s hilarious. I never considered that there’s a person out there that came up with the name of a show. Always figured it was some quorum or something.
Most shows I work on are named by the time I start. They were using a temp working title at first, but when I got hired, I was told it was for a show about fixing botched plastic surgery. So in my own head, I called it Botched.
One day I was talking with the assistant to one of the executives for the production company and he mentioned that they still needed an actual name and I should let them know if I had any ideas. A couple of weeks later, he told me that they sent to their list of ideas to the E! network, and that E liked Botched the best. My payment? That story. LOL!
A buddy of mine owns a software company and they do a lot of government work. As such, their projects need cool acronyms. He calls me every time, describes the project, and I try to come up with something. Several of my names have been submitted and/or the bid won. My favorite was RETNA because it was all about viewing things.
That was a non-trivial part of my last job I wrote a SBIR proposal for a comms system for the new extra-vehicular activity suit and got to call it “AEVA”. Pretty much the peak of my government work.
Ha! We(me and dA) both get quarterly earnings off my photography sales but there’s no way Angelo would be giving any of that money from the sale to Wix back to the artists =P. Jark maybe, but he was ousted a long time ago
This does lead me to the point that since the Glowforge forum is discourse driven, it is going to be weak on the ease of showcasing design and product. Would be interesting for them to put in a showcase tab for the GFUI or in the forum that simply displays glamour shots of what folks may care to post and requires click through for discussion.
I love this idea! There have been so many projects here that have sparked ideas, and as time goes on those sparks fade. I would love to be able to scroll through a Made on a Glowforge photo gallery!
