Paint for Toddler toys?

I’m trying to make a name puzzle for a 1 year old. I got the cuts but can’t seem to figure out what paint works on wood but also isn’t too toxic for a 1 year old. I tried water based but it really needs multiple coats on wood and that doesn’t work. Hoping someone here has overcome this problem before!

For things that can be chewed on your options are limited. If you’ve got your heart set on colours, Milk Paint is certified to be ok for babies. My personal go-to for finishes is Tung oil which, once dry, is food safe.

but in the end, you’re going to want to go with one that’s certified safe for kids/food safe - and that should be listed prominently on any container.
