Painting proofgrade… WHY are all the woods and veneers finished??? I have to paint/stain (with analine dye) all my things and it just sucks that they’re all finished. Anyone try painting proofgrade maple veneer or hardwood/plywood? Anyway to do it without sanding off the finishing?? Will they ever sell proofgrade without a finishing???

Lasering stained wood

Hey folks, Just had some one contact me for a “carved” wood sign. They want a solid wood oak, with a carved saying, and the wood stained, white painted letters. My plan is to stain the wood, mask, laser engrave, paint white the engraved area, then pull masking and clear coat. The question to the class is , is it okay to laser wood stain. Eg. But not this colour: As long as the oil base flashes would the pigment be that bad? Cheers and thanks.

Staining and varnishing wood before cutting?

Hello, I’ve recently received my Glowforge and am trying to learn everything I can! I’m in love with the finish of the proofgrade wood but it’s too expensive to get in the uk. I want to be able to get that sort of finish on wood/plywood I buy, but would ideally like to, as with PG, add the finish before I cut it. Are there any varnishes or stains or finishes that you recommend for treating wood pre-cutting? I’m an illustrator and metal worker by trade and so wood is an entirely alien world to …
