at some point in the near future I want to do this. I have plans for multiple layers of paint and masking, but they got pushed back a little bit by 3d engraving and the new software fix dan and team added last night for importing positionally accurate things =).

Also, look up Mokume-gane. It’s a layered metal technique that polymer clay artists use a lot. I’m sure it could be adapted to laserable materials like wood, acrylic, etc.

Just a little more information about fordite. Yes, the automotive industry has greatly changed the paint process and excess spray like this is no longer produced, so no new fordite. Good for the environment, bummer for us as there is no more of this beautiful material being produced.

It isn’t fordite but I played around with paint pouring - something I want to work with someday when I have the time.

You could totally make something like this using casting urethane resin that’s been pigmented and spread out or sprayed over a thin sheet mold. There are resins with 3 minute working times that would allow rapid build-up of layers. Hmmmm…

it hasnt, but I can do it manually. just working on tweaking my settings to get it looking acceptable.

OK, my brain took the “3D engraving” and “new software fix added last night” from your previous comment, and smooshed them into one awesome happening, that did not happen. hahaha

technically there shoulndt be any difference between 3d engraving and regular engraving settings except that they do them for you in one of them =P.
