I was printing a Tab & Slot tester from Cuttle but didn’t notice the scrap Maple I was using was blocking the rail and now my print head is out of alignment. I’ve followed the suggestions for self-repair (turn GF off, move laser arm to center, move PH under camera, turn GF back on, print GofGM) but still mis-aligned. Suggestions?
Turning it off and back on should have completely fixed this issue. I would turn it off and make sure the laser arm is square and pushed all the way back to the home position. Position the printhead at the left margin home position. After you turn it back on, set focus on a scrap of material, place a test file, cut the file and share the result of the placement here for further evaluation.
I realigned the laser arm again and that seemed to fix the problem as long as the material is lying flat on the crumb tray! However, if I use a .5" riser, which I do a lot in order to reduce flashback, the alignment is way off. Set Focus 1 is lying flat, Set Focus 2 is on risers.
The maximum thickness of anything on the honeycomb tray is 1/2". If you are elevating your material by 1/2" you are always going to be out of focus and out of alignment. The focus range of the lens is 1/2". I suggest you use a shorter riser. The first photo shows very clearly that your Glowforge is operating as designed.
That’s really interesting because I’ve used those 1/2" risers WITH the crumb tray for months with no adverse alignment problems until now. And I’ve also used the attached risers, which I just now
tried a test cut but actually SAW the UI shift so cancelled the print. Why am I having alignment problems all of sudden with risers? I’m telling you, @dklgood, I’ve used them for months.
These are the little 1/2" risers that started the problem.
All I know is that it has always been the case that 1/2" is the max for items on the tray. The printhead will crash into items much taller than that.
If you see the image shift when you click print, it must be that set focus was not used prior to clicking print. Once set focus has been used, there is no change to the camera view.
At least I know the work-around now and will remove the crumb tray when using risers just to be safe. I’ll consider this a solved situation. Thanks for your help. VERY much appreciated.
