I’ve just received a replacement printer head cable and I hope it works OK!

The large flat cardboard pack had obviously been bent on route, and the enclosed cable has a couple of ‘slight’ kinks in it.

It seems to me that this method of packing leaves a great deal to be desired.

Given the radius of the curve that the rear section has to make in order to be installed, it seems to me that wrapping the cable around, say, a 4” diameter by 6” long piece of cardboard tube would not only be a much safer way to send it, but a lot cheaper, too.

Well changing the cable has not had the desired effect, but I cannot assume a faulty replacement. Rather, I have to assume a problem deeper down. It would be too much of a coincidence for a replacement part to produce the same fault

I’ve now added to my woes ! In order to rule out damp condensation being a factor (I am in Mississippi, after all) I’ve had a Dyson blowing warm air into the open Goldfinger, and an extractor fan pulling any dampness out. This has caused the repair done to the lid hinges some years ago to soften and part company. So now I have to fix that as well.

Ho hum.

First, nerve wracking step completed - the hinge connector strip is now completely separated from the glass, and I can proceed the cleaning up.

I wonder if there is any obvious symptom of the camera cable connector board being the problem rather than the black cable itself ?

Or even the camera itself ?

Thoughts ?

Does anyone know the type of connector used for this cable ?

I’m thinking of making a plug-in test board, possibly for future loans to owners, before they buy an unnecessary replacement.

Got 5 of the connectors on order, so I’ll see what I can come up with. I’m thinking that interconnecting them with multiple shorting, then a single LED to show there is continuity in all traces. That would be simpler to build than 24 or so LEDS, one for each trace !

I thought that I had identified the black cable connectors, but no, wrong ones. So now I have yet another set of 5 connectors that seem to be surplus !!!

However the good news is that Glowfinger is now up and running again, with the new cable in situ.

The only other thing that I have done is to make a tiny movement of the white cable, where it goes into the left hand socket. The blue tape on it did seem slightly out of line, but now looks OK.

Two other observations for anyone going down this path - acetone is a good solvent/softening agent for epoxy resin, and putting the black cable back is much easier of you do it when the lid is off !

So glad you’re up and running again! Sounds like it was a frustrating process but with lots of successful troubleshooting in the end.
