Yeah that is probably the smarter thing to do but I had some credits burning a hole in my pocket lol
That’s my position as well. However, since my 'forge delivery can reasonably be counted in hours, I’m starting to regret that. When I blow through all of my sample I have a feeling I"m not going to be happy with myself.
Not sure if you have one in your area, but we have recycled materials stores in towns all over out here. My wife and I visited the Re-Store in Bellingham last weekend – hardwood scraps, pieces of slate, glass – all kinds of things left over from building and construction projects, do-it-yourselfers, etc. and the prices are incredibly low as they are all recycled. Also have furniture, tools, etc. - got a tremendously stable work table with a heavy wood top and an iron frame for my GF and my largest 3D printer there for $20
The Re-Stores I have been to always have huge bins full of drawer-pulls, knobs, latches, handles, and other peripheral stuff for unique projects.
Interesting. So… Like a thrift shop… for materials? I wonder how I’d even search for such a place.
“Habitat For Humanity Re-Store” locations are all over the place. There are other “recycled building material” places locally (Like RE:SOURCE in Boulder, Co.)
Pretty much.
You might look in your area under Recycling – also Habitat for Humanity stores in your area might be able to direct you too. And yeah – that’s a really good description – a thrift store for materials.
Oh! I didn’t realize that’s what I was looking for! I have one 10 minutes from here!
Thanks! I’ll have to go check it out sometime! Heck, maybe that’s where tomorrow’s lunch break will be!
You better have something to tide you over while you wait for your next PG shipment. Amazon Prime to the rescue
That’s cool. I’m leary to try “other” materials yet. I have 0 laser experience. And I kinda feel like I need to try the best before I try the rest. I need the ability to discern material issues from user issues and I don’t know any other way to do that.
Grab some Baltic Birch plywood and some acrylic - the acrylic is pretty indistinguishable from PG (all acrylic is masked). The Baltic Birch in 12"x12" squares is a good alternative to PG Maple Ply but isn’t masked - you’ll either need blue painters tape or sand it after it’s cut. But PG Maple Ply settings work fine on Amazon BB plywood. The 12x12 fits on the bed without and mucking about. They do have 12x24 but that needs trimming. You can get it at Woodcraft too if there’s one local. But the Amazon stuff costs me less than $1/sq ft (I think) so it’s great for first runs of things. You shouldn’t run into any problems with knots or glue pockets messing things up.
You might also look for a St. Vincent de Paul “store” in your area. We have two locations here, one of them has large appliances and tools, the other has reclaimed building materials, windows, doors, raw materials, as well as the usual furniture, clothing and books.
The one near me is almost all new materials that were donated for house builds but aren’t in sufficient quantity to use in a build. It lets them makes some $ off what otherwise would be scrapped. And you can get new materials for a pretty good price as long as you don’t need lots of matched stuff (which is kind of the whole thing with lasers )
Thanks! I’ll do that! Heck… that’s what being Primary’s all about! (Yes… I just finished S03 of Twelve Monkeys over the weekend and it’s all still sinking in.)
Oh, how 'bout that! Yeah definitely sounds worth the trip!
Thanks. None close enough to me to make it worth the ride. Closest is 1.5 hrs away.
Yeah, finished it in a 4 day watch binge. Much better to watch it that way, you could remember the subtle twists.
And yes, I go through Baltic Birch at many sheets a week in the GF. It’s great, because it cuts/engraves well, is pretty freakin cheap and glues up nice. I just put my own masking paper on it (the one from Sign warehouse)
I gotta say… I’ve really enjoyed the series. It’s definitely struck the right balance of drama, comedy, and sci-fi. Which is very hard to do. SG-1 did it amazingly well. Farscape did it pretty decently. But so many other shows can never find that difficult balance.
The proof grade store sent my me in 3 days so order now and when you run out then BAM a refill
It’s so tempting! I’m trying to be responsible here!
Whats the fun in that?
