QOTD from Glowforge: What do you do with your time (professionally and/or personally)?

Professionally: I’m a UNIX systems administrator at a small science/engineering college. These days I mostly manage Mac OS X and Linux (mostly Gentoo, some Ubuntu) machines, plus some Cisco switches, but I’ve dealt with plenty of other systems in the past (e.g., Solaris, IRIX, FreeBSD). Long ago I had a few programming jobs, but I haven’t been a professional programmer for almost 15 years now. I still dabble in a few things, though. :slightly_smiling:

Personally: My main hobby is needlework. Crewel, cross stitch, needlepoint, appliqué, needle felting, etc. I plan to use my GF to mark patterns on fabric (so much less work than traditional methods!), to cut felt appliqué pieces, to make holes in cardstock for embroidery, to cut out small acrylic or wooden shapes with holes for embroidery to make Christmas ornaments, and to make frames for small embroidery projects. And of course I’ll be using the GF for making all sorts of other things, too.

Professionally - I’m an architect, working on industrial and commercial projects in the northeast. I’m certified in Historic Preservation and consult on the side on those sorts of topics. I’ve written two books, one on historic architecture, and one on historic postcards. Both of those books are for sale in a local gift store that sells largely locally made gifts/art. My goal with the GF would be to feed her all sorts of gift objects in quantities that are too time consuming to produce one at a time.

Personally - I’m a woodworker, artist, parent and homeowner. I own a Victorian era home that requires perpetual maintenance and I’m in the process of buying an Arts & Crafts bungalow. I’m thinking ahead to where the dust free area of my shop will be and where the GF will sit. I have a 20’ x 40’ wood shop where, when not working on the house, I make furniture.

Professionally: I am an Executive Officer for a Health Service company here in Tasmania, Australia. I also am a Marketing Consultant for a recruitment company, work one day a week at University of Tasmania on their Children’s University program and run a small design business.

Personally: I am a mum to two small boys. I own an old cottage in the hills of Tasmania where my little studio is located. I am a rescuer of too many animals and I am sleep deprived!

Professionally: I am a medical laboratory worker, and have been one for over twenty years. I’m also the safety officer for our laboratory. Yup, I run all your lab tests and make the workers be safe.
Personally: Married for over 26 years to one amazing lady. Home brewer for the last 7 years and microbiological food maker  I have video gamed on and off for stress release since my Commodore 64, I like to modify anything that moves and some stuff that doesn’t. I basically like to try to do everything or attempt it at least once before leaving it to the professionals. It usually doesn’t get to them, but I know when I’m over my head in a project. I’ve done graphic design, web publishing (before it was cool), Video editing, 3D modeling and rendering. I like to read technical and educational verses fiction… and I have a pet cat.

Getting in over my head is the story of my life, and therein is the main source of my education! (and tools :sunglasses:)
Like you, I figure if it is done by humans, I belong to that club. If I don’t know how, I will.

I did allow contractors to do the 3cm. kitchen granite countertops, and my neighbors were whispering to each other "Dave is having someone else do something for him…!?"
I built a diamond saw for exactly that type of work when I finished my downstairs bathroom in slab marble - but you can’t have the kitchen down for a month, so I spared my wife the angst and let the contractors do it in a day.

Thanks for the comment. Nice to see others who share in my love of learning and trying whatever!
I do not repair my wife’s car, even though she would let me :smirk:

For my day job I own a company, Trendy Tribals inc that manufactures laser cut stencils for face and body painting. I use CorelDraw to design and vectorize my work for the lasers. I am also a professional body painter and do things like this…we actually painted Ronda twice… :grinning:
And to answer the question before it is asked…no…I dont need an assistant…lmao

Personally, I’m a Mom of three. Daughter and two sons. I homeschool my youngest who has Aspergers (high functioning Autism). He helps out in my business as well. Married to a mechanical designer who I may or may not let play with the new “toy (GF)” when it comes in😉

Professionally: I’m a Nurse Practitioner in a busy family practice office. Love the challenge of medicine. But I also love my hobbies at home which take my mind completely off work. Personally: Married to very understanding husband for 14 years and we have 2 wonderful kids. We also raise beef and crop farm which keeps us very busy spring-fall. I’ve always dabbled in woodworking for fun. I run an Etsy shop as well, which keeps me up late at night, but I love every minute of it. Hoping to expand my physical shop space this year…would love a bigger workshop as I’ve outgrown the garage. I think the Glowforge is a great excuse for me to do that .

Professionally: I’ve been an IT consultant (generalist, programmer, administrator… I’ve worn many hats) for about the last 25 years, but in the last 5 or so I’ve been specializing in VoIP and deploying Lync or Skype for Business along with all the infrastructure that entails.

Personally: Trying to enlarge the right side of my brain because I’ve noticed I walk diagonally from slanting too far to the left. So in recent years I’ve started doing more woodworking, crafty sort of projects. Assembled my own CNC, some renovations with friends and family, helped design a tinyhouse, saved kittens, and generally tried to be The Dude.

Welcome @mztngheidi. Before I moved to my present spot a year and a half ago, I spent nine happy years in the middle of small farms where everyone had a day job that got them insurance and a retirement but worked the rest of their time with the cows and calves. I learned never to schedule a meeting for hay season.

Thanks! If the opportunity presented itself, that is something I would truly enjoy doing.

Professionally: I’m the Assistant Executive Director for a Humane Society going on 20 years next month.

Personally: I’m all over the place however always have loved tech and old stuff. I can still remember in the late 80’s being told to stop wasting my time and money on computers. The good ole BBS days  only to have to setup several computers for those very people decades later  I also like old things and getting them back to original shape or maintaining them. House 1845, Car 1950, Motorcycle right now oldest is first year Honda Gold-wing, really want an Indian to match car though. Working on…well storing energy up to work on a 1928 Ford Boat-tail speedster. Oh the custom parts for house and cars cannot wait.

Once a year I go to a little gathering called Pennsic War and have a great time with a few thousand people, while all tech is banished there, the amount of projects for there is astronomical.

Professionally I am a full time member of the Air National Guard. I am a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) and I supervise a team of Aircraft Maintenance Production Managers (Maintenance Schedulers). We maintain all scheduled maintenance actions for our aircraft as well as all historical documentation. We also do long term planning for future in dept preventative maintenance actions required. Pretty stressful stuff at times.

Personally I am the mother of an almost 12 year old daughter who plays some pretty legit soccer (yeah, I am a soccer mom). I also do paper crafting (scrapbooking and card making). This is my creative release from the stresses of work. My husband is a tech junkie who turned me onto the Glowforge. I hope to use it to open a business making military awards and memorabilia.
