Scaling issue/question

I am trying to make a simple art stand. I’ve modified a file I purchased on Etsy in Inkscape (I need the legs to be taller) and have designed it to be 7” tall overall. When I upload the svg file to the Glowforge interface, however, it is increased in size to about 9.5” overall. Any ideas what is going on here?

TIA

If the original svg was created with the incorrect dpi it can cause this issue.

I’d suggest copying everything from your document and pasting it into a fresh window. That should start everything fresh and clear of issues like this.

This is good policy on any svg you get from Etsy. There can be hidden issues like this in a few ways. Moving the paths to a new svg just removes a lot of the potential issues.

Ha! I’ll try that. I was just thinking that maybe it was something in the original file.

Thank you.

Sounds like an adobe creating. A search for adobe scaling export dpi will pop up explanations for anyone interested.

Yeah most likely adobe but you can also use inkscape and manually set the incorrect dpi.

If the file was created a long time ago that (72 dpi) would have been the default. (2016 or so)

96 dpi is the current standard and what Glowforge expects. You can correct that manually but it’s just as quick and more sure to just paste into a new doc.

I’m not a technical person when it comes to exporting/saving preferences, but recently, the scaling is always off for me when the file is an SVG. Even when I don’t save anything from Adobe but just control C and V artwork into the Glowforge interface (didn’t use to happen). Quick fix: just save the files as a PDF instead, and everything stays scaled correctly when uploaded to Glowforge.
