A year or more ago I engraved on tile for my brother. He came back and asked for me to do it again, so I used the “Ceramic Tile” setting that I had saved, assuming it would be the same. But the result was fuzzier. The lines not nearly as clear. I’ve played with different speeds to no avail. An autofocus did make it more crisp, but still not as crisp as the original. Any ideas of what else I could do?
Do you remember your previous settings? I read somewhere that with the speed improvement updates with glowforge, some people’s personal saved settings had slightly changed too. If you remember the settings, you should check to see if they are the same as before.
I don’t know much about tile (I’ve engraved tile, but i don’t know the properties of tile), so I’m not sure how each one varies, but maybe if the settings have changed, it would effect how much and how long the laser is being focused on each part. I should check my own saved settings later… I’ve gotten lazy.
It could also be a change in material - are the two from the same batch/package?
He said he bought them at the same time. And we’ve done it on multiple tiles all with the same results.
Unfortunately, I don’t remember the previous settings. It was a long time ago. We did some playing today and discovered that slowing down the speed did help. Then turning down the power helped more. It’s still not as sharp, but it’s closer.
What you are doing is heat shocking the tile glaze so it “explodes” as the laser goes by. I would think therefore that faster would work better than decreasing power as the heat would have less time to widen the line.
