Small Black Piece Dangling

I just unpacked the unit and there is a small (1.5" x 0.75" x thin) black piece dangling into the chamber from the right, by a single wire. Where is it supposed to go? And what’s it for?

Are there supposed to be laser glasses? Anyway, no glasses.

Laser glasses for Pro only. Not needed for Basic. If a Pro then the glasses are inside the white foam inside the unit.

A picture of the black piece with your cell phone would help.

Is it a ribbon cable with a black connector? That connects to the head when you are ready to install it.

A little blurry, but it looks like one of the WiFi antennas. They stick to the inside of the case.

It also looks a bit like the piece of plastic line that went through the foam packed in the machine, to make it easier to lift up and out. It puzzled me because it wasn’t there on my PRU. Must have been a relatively recent addition.

No, it’s attached to the unit’s electronics by a single wire.

Definitely a WiFi antenna.

One is stuck on the right side, and the other to the front.

Here’s a picture of the one in the front:

It could probably just be stuck back on, since the wire is still attached.

Maybe a piece of good double sided tape if you can find where it was originally stuck. Wouldn’t use glue or epoxy. Make sure the wire is not in the way of anything that moves or electronics.

Not a reply to scott, but to the OP.

Thanks for letting us know about this.

Like other’s have mentioned, that looks like the Wi-Fi antenna for your Glowforge. This should be stuck to the right-hand interior plastic wall of your unit near the stepper motor, held in place with double-sided tape. The fact that it came loose shouldn’t affect the operation of the antenna.

If possible, please try pressing the antenna back against the interior plastic wall. If it does not adhere easily, you can leave it loose in that corner.

Regarding the safety glasses, the Glowforge Pro is a Class 4 laser which requires extra safety precautions, like safety glasses. The Glowforge Basic is a Class 1 laser, so it does not require safety glasses. Like @rpegg said, if you unit is a Pro, glasses should be included in your order.

If you ordered a Pro and did not receive safety glasses, please email us at support@glowforge.com and we’ll make it right.

If you have any other questions, please post a new topic.
