I am getting no answers from GF Support. This is a less than 30 day old lens , straight from the GF shop. One day, it worked fine, the next it did this. Their only advice is to buy a new lens. I can’t afford to put another lens in there having no idea why it ruined this lens, not knowing if the new lens I put in will just have the same thing happen again. Any thoughts?
The laser was misfocused and burned the lens.
Generally this happens when a) there’s dirt on the lens that catches the laser, or b) the mirror is out of focus and mis-aims the laser. The former is WAY more common than the latter, especially if you see no issues with your mirror (the one in the head, not the one under the left side).
Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know. So it is unlikely to happen again to a new lens?
I’d maybe up my lens cleaning timeline.
Do check becaause if you see something on the mirror (you’ll likely need to clean/replace that too) you’ll need to verify how it got put in incorrectly.
So no, unless whatever happened happens again, so it’s hard to judge for certain :-/
The mirror had the same burned marks on it. They cleaned off and I don’t see any problems, but I will consider a new mirror also. I just didn’t want to spend the money on a new lens until I knew more about what had happened and had an idea that it wasn’t just going to happen again. Support just wouldn’t say what the problem was, just get a new lens, which wasn’t logical to me.
It looked to me as if that was what had happened, but I’m no physics expert or laser expert
Sorry, sent that to myself, not you. Thank you again!
No problem - if the marks on the mirror cleaned off then you shouldn’t need a new one. Likely it’s a weird one-off!
I wonder why they wouldn’t say that. Maybe they assumed I knew? Oh, well, I’m just glad to know that it’s not completely kaput.
Honestly, it’s probably because there’s no way for them to fix it - and people tend to get really defensive when you point out that the most likely culprit is dirt - so it’s probably more efficient to skip that. I don’t know, obvi, but that’d be my guess!
That should clean right off with some 90% rubbing alcohol and a qtip.
