WHAT THE WHAT! PRODUCTION UNIT! :squee:

Not the option I am taking. I’m working on an idea for a semi-elaborate venting notion that allows me to vent outside the apartment without knocking holes in the wall/etc while I wait for the filter. I’m mostly thinking along the lines of a connector similar to going through the wall, but mount it where I can use magnetic clamping to pass through the screen without a hole and run a hose 4-6’ away from the slider. If I figure it out, will share photos.

I plan to create a device as pictured only I’ll use acrylic sandwiching the window screen and the the vent will attach with magnets. That way I can cut the screen from the center. I’ll have an additional piece to block the hole when the GF isn’t in use and it will also attach with magnets.

I’m thinking something similar, but I can’t actually cut the screen, so I was planning to have the magnets hold it so it vents through an intact screen, then through a hose on the other end.

Based on my experience with close dryer venting, if there is a mesh screen downstream from the GF, it is possible that crud is going to accumulate and interfere with the airflow. Depends on the size and quantity of particulates exhaled by the GF

Good to know. Venting through the screen will only be temporary. (That is why I got the filter.) The way I figure it, since I can detach the magnetic grip from an intact screen, I can clean the screen (after every use, if needed) until I get my filter and don’t need outside venting anymore.

Since Im working with a sliding door as well, my plan is to cut a spacer out of MDF that can be held in place by closing the door against it, then putting the vent through that. Pretty much how a window fan would be put into place. This way it avoids gunking up the screen. Plus, it’s really hot here now (100+ degrees) and the MDF will block slightly more airflow than having the screen open.

Oh man, I have an old dog door like this that could be converted pretty easy. Now if I only had a sliding door lol. Venting is going to be my Achilles heel as I have very old crank-out windows. I’m hoping the fireplace chimney works well, but that kinda limits me. Oh well, it’s a pretty cool problem to have actually

When I had the beta unit here I vented out the window through a normal window screen.
After several months of steady use it was definitely dusty, but I doubt it would impede much air flow.
Maybe you would have to clean the screen every couple months but not much more then that.

it’ll probably depend on what gets cut - wall-to-wall MDF will definitely gunk things up after a while…

Good point. With the summer heat coming in, I might get to something that doesn’t use the screen. Options, options, so much to consider.

Wooooo! I just got my e-mail! Our Glowforges will be able to make each-other’s escutcheons!

Thanks! I have some ideas about exotic materials to try that I don’t think I’ve heard anybody mention yet, so that’ll be exciting!

Though really, I should take those risks on the lasersaur instead. ;D

Congratulation! Now we can split material orders! You can still come by and scratch the Glowforge itch before yours gets here if you want.

FYI, I went to P&K Custom Acrylics in Malden the other day. They sell there scraps/cutoffs for about $4/lb. It was mostly extruded acrylic, but there a couple of smaller cast acrylic pieces I got.

Yippie! Happy days are ahead! Congratulations.

Knowing I’m 5 days from shipping notification to delivery I’m on the edge of my seat to get my e-mail today so I can play with this thing all weekend next week. :scream:

Heck yes! I’ve got some (obviously not proofgrade) cherry-veneer ply from
Boulter which I think will work well

Basic, not Pro, right?

Congrats on the email! I’m excited to see how fast they are starting to roll out. I received my proof grade order today. It was nice to get a delivery from glowforge lol

Yes, just the Basic. My aim is to ventilate out the window.
