This used to be a thriving community. Very few “old timers”/founders are still around and particpating.
Did they go somewhere else? Did their machines give up the ghost and they simply put “lasering” behind them?

All the above and more:
- At least two have died
- Several have gone big and upgraded to industrial lasers
- Quite a few simply lost interest
- There is now a Discord server (bad idea in my opinion but I don’t run things)
- Some have found “homes” on Facebook forums that fit them better
- Most that I miss fall into one of the above or close, but I simply don’t know.

But to get back to the question of whether or not we’re seeing a slowdown… I looked at my search and it includes support results, so it seems like the activity isn’t decreasing?
You can check any one day like this:

So, for now, doesn’t seem like there’s much change on average over the last month, at least in terms of new topics. Let’s look at total posts:
7 days = 3035, or 433 posts per day. Month = 12422, or 414 posts per day. So if we believe that stat, it looks like it’s pretty much on normal track as well. If anything there’s an uptick this last week, but that may not be surprising with the holidays.
We can do similar math on likes: about 1161 likes per day over the last week, 1236 likes per day on average over the last 30 days. Not a huge swing there either.
Anyway, seems like forum use is still steady or even maybe a bit on the upswing.

I’m an Original Founder & My Glowforge died a couple of years ago. I went with Aeon Mira 7. I still visit this site everyday to see whats happening. I loved my Glowforge Basic & I’m so happy that I purchased it when I did. Anyway Keep up the great work & Thank You for all the information you all provide.

Magic canvas. That’s fun but not as fun as hearing about say GF 2.0.

As I understand it the company’s philosophy on their social presence changed from trying to get everyone to come to the forum to meeting people where they were. Lots of people were comfortable on Facebook, Twitter, etc. They decided to focus on those kinds of platforms over the forum, it’s simple economics about how they were going to spend their time.
That shift happened before the big layoffs, I wonder if anybody at Glowforge has reconsidered this stance lately. There have been a lot of changes in the social media landscape since that time. I’m not sure if it’s enough to change where they’d want to focus but somebody should be thinking about it in any case.

I try to visit daily although I tend to slack off on weekends or holidays. I don’t post a lot - but then don’t think I was ever very prolific. I do really appreciate folks posting their projects, questions, etc though - it’s a great community!
It’s definitely shifted since the early days (I’m an original backer), but then so much else in the world has changed too!

Original owner here too and I love this place. Honestly though I spend as much time chatting here with folks about unrelated items as I do laser stuff.
I try to help newcomers if I see them, but I’m afraid I’ve lost the will to answer the same question over and over again. I was definitely more motivated 8 years ago 
I still say this forum is better than Santa other venue for getting accurate info!
I wish there was a way we could “retire” some older posts that are no longer accurate since I see people finding them by searching. It would be a momentous undertaking to do so I admit.

Me too… I visit just about every day to see what’s new. I don’t post all that often anymore … partially because there’s not that many new threads lately to reply to. I never did start a lot of topics of my own, so with fewer new topics from other people my posting has cratered lately…
It seemed like there’s been a big drop-off in new topics just in the last month. I suppose a big part of that is that’s summer and people are out and about more, spending less time at home. But with traffic steadily declining for years the summer drop-off is even more noticeable than usual.

I admit I took breaks for “reasons” I won’t get into here, but I despise Discourse and social media - although isn’t this a form of it? I don’t think so, becuase it’s the total garbage many people share and re-share that drives me nuts. The majority of my family and many “friends” are set to ignore. I want to stay connected but I don’t want to see the drivel they succumb to…

I think a big difference between this forum and other social media is the significant price of admission. You can’t post here unless you are an owner or registered user of the hardware. I think that tends to filter out a lot of the BS, so it will always be my preferred venue. I guess the Discord channel is similar but we don’t get the long term accumulation of useful info there.

I try to get on the GF forum every day, or at least every couple of days if I can. I want to see what GF people are doing, and I don’t like using Discourse so never go on it, and rarely even check FB anymore, and am not on any of the GF groups on it. I haven’t been using my laser much lately, so I haven’t posted anything new recently. I would hate for this forum to die though, as it’s one place I love to visit as often as possible.

I still check in several times a day to scan the new posts, but I haven’t even turned on my Basic in probably over a year. I’m tempted to fire it up just to see if it still works!

Another founder here. I check here daily but my GF is on the other side of the country from me. Most of the last two years I’ve been at my dad’s house. He just turned 103 
and needs some help around the house.

Yeah, the similarity in naming is confusing!
The easy mnemonic for remembering the difference is that nobody wants discord; we’re here for polite discourse instead!

Signing on every day is still very important to me. Moved three months ago, and starting a major remodel. No idea when I’ll have any free time thoughts that might allow a laser project … or any other fun project.
